Embu leaders promote sports to fight illicit brews, drugs

Embu Leaders have embarked on an initiative to preach peace and create awareness of the evils of drug and substance abuse among youths through sports in the county.

Speaking at different venues, the leaders noted that second generation brews and drugs have been a big challenge to youths in Embu, adding that there was need to promote sports as an alternative lifestyle for the youths in order to keep them away from drugs.

According to Embu County Governor Martin Wambora, such initiatives are important in growing talents among youths.

Wambora added that the youths would have no time to think about drugs since they will be busy in the fields and thereby act as good role models for others to emulate, since many youths have become millionaires through sports.

The governor also said that the county government will organise a bigger tournament in the next financial year that will start at the ward level and all wards in the county will be represented.

In a tournament held at Runyenjes stadium in Runyenjes Sub County, nine teams from different parts of the ward came together, with the winner taking home a trophy and Sh50,000 while 2nd and 3rd runners up got Sh30,000 and Sh20,000 respectively.

According to the organiser and area MCA Steve Simba, the next tournament will be held in a month’s time and will run for three months.
