Enough politicking, now get down to work - Clergy tells politicians

PCEA General Assembly moderator Rev. Thigu Mutahi.

A month after Kenyans went to the ballot to elect political leaders in the general election, the church is calling on those leaders to embark on the delivery of their campaign promises with earnestness.

The head of the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA), saying now that the elections are behind us, it is time for people to work.

“Starting from the president elect to all leaders, we now remind you that the electioneering period is over, and it's time you roll up your sleeves and start doing what you promise, because 5 years is very short and we would want to see what you have done,” PCEA General Assembly moderator Rev. Thigu Mutahi said.

At the same time, the church is calling on Kenyans to unite after the hotly contested elections while urging those that won to reach out to those who lost in order to heal the nation.

“Kwa sababu wale walishindwa bado wameumia, wacha wapone pole pole, wacha kuwarushia maneno Mali, na wengine Kwa mitando, you know wanarushia watu maneno Kwa mitando Kwa wale walishindwa na wale waliwapigia Kura, wakisema mungu hakuwa upande wenu, apana, Mungu alikuwa pande zote mbili,” Mutahi said.

The church is however not amused by those elected under Azimio la Umoja who are now decamping and joining the government.

They say the opposition has a critical role to play in any democracy.

“It doesn't look good for someone in the opposition to go to government, because they have work to oversee the government, so when those in opposition run to shake hands and be part of government, we are a bit worried, who will be our eyes,” the moderator said.

The Presbyterian church has in the meantime also promised to support the government and all elected leaders in fulfilling their mandate while adding that they will hold them accountable to fulfil the promises they made to Kenyans.
