EPRA DG Daniel Kiptoo appointed Vice Chair of global energy regulators body

Acknowledging his appointment, Kiptoo said the new role places Kenya at the centre of international discussions on energy policy, regulation, and innovation.

“This appointment is not just a personal milestone, but a testament to the strength and credibility of Kenya’s regulatory frameworks and the progress we have made as a country in energy reforms,” said Mr. Kiptoo. “It also presents an opportunity to bring Africa’s voice to the global regulatory table, championing sustainable and inclusive energy systems.”

ICER is a voluntary, non-profit platform established in 2009 that brings together over 200 energy regulatory authorities worldwide. It supports global cooperation among regulators and promotes stable, sustainable, and competitive energy markets.

Mr. Kiptoo’s appointment to ICER adds to a growing list of regional and international roles. In July 2024, he was elected Chair of the Global Clean Energy Promoter Steering Committee under the Regulatory Energy Transition Accelerator (RETA), a body comprising over 80 regulatory authorities.

Africa is represented in RETA by Kenya, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Mauritius, Morocco, Rwanda, and Sierra Leone.

Earlier, in May 2024, he was re-elected Chairperson of the Regional Association of Energy Regulators for Eastern and Southern Africa (RAERESA).

These appointments enhance Kenya’s visibility in international energy forums and provide opportunities for engagement in global policy dialogues on energy transition, digitalisation, resilience, and innovation.

They also create avenues for knowledge sharing, capacity building, and collaboration, particularly in areas such as renewable energy, infrastructure development, and regulatory reform.
