Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) traced the suspect identified as Evans Michori Kebwaro to Keroka, Kisii County where they apprehended him on Thursday.
Upon interrogation, the ex-convict named Julius Otieno, Josphat Simiyu, Dennis Mmbolo, Isaac Kinyanjui and Makhoha Wanjala as members of his gang.
The arrest came barely 24 hours after a high-powered security meeting in Nakuru led by the Cabinet Secretary for Interior Dr. Fred Matiang’i, following a presidential order.
According to the DCI, preliminary investigations indicate that Kebwaro is a jail bird and is responsible for at least three murders committed within Mawanga area and its environs, which were reported at Kiugoine police station between June 15 and 24 this year.
Detectives said the daytime murders targeting women would see the perpetrators rape the victims before strangling them and setting their bodies on fire.
According to the DCI, 20-year-old Grace Wanjiku’s body was found in Kiamaina, Nakuru north Sub County on June 14, 2022. 7 days later, a middle-aged woman identified as Susan Wambui, was found dead in her bedroom at a house in Kiamaina, with her 3-year-old baby rescued from the rubble.
In the latest murder incident, 23-year-old Diana Opicho was found murdered in cold blood in the same area, with the incident sparking online outrage following the series of senseless murders.
According to the DCI, Kebwaro has since confessed to killing 7 other people, with detectives placing him at the scene of three murders.
"The monster has confessed to killing 7 people in cold blood and so far, detectives have managed to place him at the scene of three murders through cutting-edge forensic technology," said the DCI.
The six suspects will now be grilled at the DCI headquarters for a comprehensive forensic examination.
Police have in the meantime assured residents in Nakuru of their safety with an operation currently underway to smoke out more criminals behind the cold blood murders
