Ex-CAS Ken Obura picked to battle Kisumu Governor Nyong'o for ODM ticket
Former East African Community Chief
Administrative Secretary (CAS) Ken Obura is now set to face off with Kisumu Governor
Anyang’ Nyong’o in the ODM primaries as they both seek the party ticket in
their gubernatorial bid.
This follows a consensus between Kisumu
Senator Fred Outa, former Governor Jack Ranguma, former Kisumu County
Assembly Speaker Onyango Oloo and Ken Obura after months of joint
campaigns.
The quartet, in their countywide rallies, had
revealed that they would consolidate their support bases to field one candidate
against incumbent Governor Nyong’o, who they accuse of failing to deliver on
his manifesto.
Senator Outa, who was previously allied to Nyong’o in the 2017 campaigns, championed the team as the redeemer of the electorate, poking holes in the county boss’ administration.
“We have decided to follow instructions from the party headquarters, that before we declare anyone we must sit and have a consensus. The five of us all agreed that the person who is going to be able to carry the flag is none other than Ken Obura," said Senator Outa on Friday.
To navigate the newly enacted Political
Parties Amendment Bill of 2021, the four further revealed that they will field
another candidate to vie in the Kisumu gubernatorial race in the August poll,
should Obura fall off at the ODM nominations slated for April.
Obura, who was ousted as the Kisumu Central MP before his appointment into government, welcomed the endorsement, promising to hit the ground running in the coming week to avail his manifesto and popularize his candidature.
"I want to assure you that we’re going to walk together. I will begin my campaigns officially next week, door-to-door, to make sure I speak to you," he stated.
"As your next governor, I want to assure you that we will make sure you’re happy every time, and we will make sure that our people who were previously happy in this city before Nyong’o took over are taken back to their original happiness.”
The Kisumu gubernatorial race had attracted
five aspirants, with the consolidation of the quartet watering the number down
to two as of February 18, 2022.
