Former Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama has cautioned Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and other political leaders against tribal- based political coalitions ahead of the 2027 General election.

Muthama, who currently serves as a Commissioner of the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC), made the remarks on Sunday in Kwale County, urging leaders to reject tribal- based politics and redirect their attention toward unity and development.

He said that Kenya’s political environment has increasingly been defined by argumentative rhetoric and rivalry, often amplified in public forums and on social media.

“My position in our nation of Kenya is not to support tribal or community-based leadership,” Muthama said.

Muthama emphasized that no single community has the strength to single-handedly determine presidential outcomes, noting that national leadership is shaped by the collective will of Kenyans.

“Kenya is a big country, and it is not Kikuyu votes that make a president, it is not Kamba votes that make a president; it is the votes of Kenyans,” he said.

Muthama cited past administrations, saying former Presidents Jomo Kenyatta, Daniel arap Moi, Mwai Kibaki, and Uhuru Kenyatta were elected through broad national support rather than ethnic- based.

He urged leaders, particularly those positioning themselves for 2027, to reject divisive politics and instead build inclusive national coalitions.

On November 30, Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua announced a new political pact between the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) and Wiper, saying the two parties had agreed to field joint candidates in the 2027 Nairobi gubernatorial, senatorial, and women's representative positions, as well as in most parliamentary and ward seats.

“We have agreed that out of the 17 parliamentary seats, we will take 16, and out of the 85 ward seats, DCP and Wiper will take 75,” Gachagua said.

However, Musyoka later dismissed the claims, denying the existence of any such formal agreement between Wiper and DCP.
