Fake exam papers in circulation as KCSE begins

Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. Jacob Kaimenyi has warned candidates against engaging in any examination irregularities.

Kaimenyi warned that stern action will be taken against those found engaging in any form of exam malpractices saying that the Ministry of Education is aimed at ensuring credibility in examinations.

The education CS also requested exams supervisors and invigilators to ensure conducive environment for the candidates throughout the exams period.

This follows Thursday’s warning by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) to the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examination (KCSE) and the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) candidates and their parents against buying fake exam papers being circulated.

KNEC CEO Joseph Kivilu said there was a fake chemistry papers in circulation with the number 1246 at the bottom.

“Fraudsters are busy at work to exploit the candidates. Candidates need to be warned to avoid the temptations and wait for our exams as scheduled,” he said.

Kivilu said the council will intercept fake papers and take legal action against individuals found circulating and selling them.

This year’s exams come at a time when teachers, who are usually contracted by KNEC to administer and supervise the examinations, are on strike over pay rise.

The national examinations practical papers started on Monday while the theories will start on October 15th and run until November 5th.

Candidates will sit Chemistry Paper One on October 28th and Paper Two on November 4th.

Exam cheating has been reported severally over the years. Last year, KNEC raised alarm over fake papers allegedly being sold by university and college students at between Ksh 50, 000 and Ksh 200, 000 a set.
