FAKE: US Gov't has not revoked visas for DP Gachagua, CS Kuria, MPs Ichungwa and Nyoro

The United States Embassy in Kenya has dismissed reports that President Joe Biden's administration has revoked visas held by four Kenyan politicians among them Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

This follows online claims that the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has taken action against Gachagua, Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria, Kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro and his Kikuyu counterpart Kimani Ichungwa.

The statement claimed that the four planned and sponsored violence witnessed on Monday, March 27, 2023, targeted at opposition supporters and private properties owned by former President Uhuru Kenyatta and Azimio boss Raila Odinga.

"These visa revocations demonstrate that the United States will promote accountability not only for regime leaders, but also for officials who enable the regime's assaults on democracy and human rights," the unsubstantiated statement reads in part.

The statement has been shared widely on social media. Another social media user tweeted about the fake report, even as others linked it to a supposed probe by The Hague-based International Criminal Court (ICC).

Citizen Digital sought views from the US Embassy on the statement that has been circulating on various social media platforms.

U.S. Embassy Nairobi Spokesman Andrew Veveiros dismissed it as fake, urging Kenyans to ignore it.

“I can confirm that the report doing rounds is fake as there has been no such communication from the United States Government,” Veveiros said.
