Family of Agnes Wanjiru who was killed by British soldier seeks audience with Parliamentary Committee

The family of Agnes Wanjiru, the woman who was murdered by a British soldier in Nanyuki in 2012, is seeking an audience with the Parliamentary Committee on Defense and Foreign Relations regarding the probe of her death.

In a letter penned by family representative, Kelvin Kubai, her sister Rose Wamuyu reckons that the committee should let her family be present when submissions on the progress of the probe are presented before them.

On November 2, Members of Parliament issued an ultimatum to the British government asking them to surrender the suspect so that he can be tried under Kenyan Law, failure to which they will push for the shelving of a military agreement between Kenya and Britain.

Should the agreement fail to be extended, British forces stationed in Nanyuki will be required to leave the country indefinitely.

Wamuyu similarly stated that her family is yet to get closure following the incident, despite it having transpired almost a decade ago.

“It's been almost a decade since the sad events of March 2012, and our hearts have never fully come to a peaceful closure. Indeed there have been times of hope when we felt justice was nigh, but these too were brought to a painful disappointment,” the letter seen by Citizen Digital reads in part.

Wanyua consequently stated that the coverage of the deceased’s death by the Times Newspaper on October 24, 2021, gave the family a renewed sense of hope that the case would finally be settled, but the feeling has already started fading away.  

“But as the time passes by, the promises made by the relevant authorities and government actors fade away. In the end it is no better we waited for our renewed hopes are extinguished,” the letter read.
