Family of man lynched on suspicion of theft torches  home in retaliatory attack

A mob in Elgeyo Marakwet killed a 40-year-old man on suspicion of livestock theft.

Richard Kipyemit was reportedly apprehended by the mob with 22 sheep in a forest in Kapyego at 2 a.m. on Sunday morning.

The sheep are thought to have been stolen from Jones Kosgei’s home, according to a police report.

On Sunday, the decedent’s family stormed Mr Kosgei’s home and set fire to multiple properties, including three residential houses and a store owned by Mr. Kosgei, as well as three kitchens owned by Joyce Tanui, Tula Tanui, and David Tanui.

The scene of the incident was visited by detectives from Kapcherop police station

Mr Tanui, who is accused of being involved in the killing of the suspect, has surrendered to the police and is now being held in custody.

The body of the deceased was moved to Kapsowar Mission Hospital Mortuary pending an autopsy.
