Family of patient found dead at Mbagathi hospital demands answers

The family of a woman whose body was found at the Mbagathi County Hospital morgue after a two-week search continues to demand answers from concerned parties.

The Red Cross-owned Emergency Plus Medical Services has however distanced itself from negligence claims saying it followed the stipulated protocols while evacuating the patient from Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital.

In the company of friends, Naftali Mbaki, a bitter widower in search for answers, on Sunday pitched camp at the Emergency Plus Medical Services offices in South C area of Nairobi.

He demanded to know just where his wife was taken before her two-week disappearance, and after hours of waiting, the answers he was given did not add up to him.

“Dereva alisema alikufia njiani, na sasa hawa wananiambia ati kulingana na statement ya hospitali, alikufa kwa hospitali akitafutiwa njia ya kuingia kwa ward,” said Mbaki.

They were full of expectations that the Kenya Red Cross owned medical services E-Plus would help them unravel the puzzle.

Mzee Naftali claimed that the concerned parties, Mbagathi County Hospital and E-plus medical services, were playing a ping pong game with him.

“Ni kunizungusha wananizungusha tu…juu mazishi ni ya lini, ntapanga na nini na sina kitu,” he said.

“Tuambiwe tu ukweli, kama kuna shida ilipatikana hapo katikati kutoka Mama Lucy kuenda Mbagathi…tuambiwe tu, sisi ni binadamu tutaelewa,” said Maurine Mwiruri, a family friend.

Emergency Plus Medical Services, in a statement, “acknowledged that it was contacted by the Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital on the 12th of July at 2340 hrs to transfer a patient from their facility to the Mbagathi County Hospital.”

The organisation, while distancing itself from negligence claims, said “it carried out the evacuation in accordance with the stipulated evacuation protocols and any further information on this issue can be sought from the hospital.”

The Mbagathi County Hospital is however yet to address the matter.
