Residents living near the Malaba and Malakisi rivers in Teso North sub-county, Busia County, are counting losses after their crops were swept away by floodwaters following days of heavy rainfall in the region.

The most affected areas include Amoni, Akiriamas, and Akiriamasit, where homes and hundreds of acres of farmland have been destroyed.

Locals are now appealing to the government for emergency assistance, including food supplies and he construction of embankments to offer a long-term solution to the persistent flooding.

“From time to time, we have appealed to the Red Cross and the government to assist us, but have not succeeded. We are appealing to the government for help,” said one resident.

Area MCA Ronald Ochalu has called for emergency assistance and urged residents to relocate to safer alternative areas.

“Residents living near flood-prone areas are urged to take precautions and move to higher ground to avoid disasters. About 75 families in the Alkiriamasit area have been affected, with the total number of people impacted exceeding 150,” he said.
