FBI, Scotland Yard rescue 95 children in a Mombasa Madrassa

A multi-agency security team on Tuesday rescued 95 children from a Madrassa suspected to be a human trafficking and radicalisation centre in Likoni, Mombasa.

The team, comprising detectives from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Scotland Yard raided the Madrassa amid an ongoing human trafficking and terror probe at the Kenyan coast.

Confirming the raid, Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) official Grace Ndirangu said they had received several reports on suspected cases of human trafficking.

The children were taken to the Coast regional police headquarters for interrogation.

Ms Ndirangu also disclosed that the children were foreign nationals from England, America, Zambia and Tanzania.

Speaking after the raid, the treasurer of the Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya (CIPK), Sheikh Hassan Omar condemned the manner in which the officers stormed the Madrassa, disrupting learning.

Sheikh Omar dismissed the claims that the centre was involved in children abuse and trafficking.

Parents of the children were reportedly asked to report to the Coast regional headquarters with relevant documents.
