A lorry and a fuel tanker collided on Saturday morning along the Southern Bypass, sparking a fire at the scene.

Witnesses at the scene near Ram Residency told the press that the crash was followed by heavy flames and thick plumes of smoke after the fuel tanker exploded into flames.

The tanker driver, who was heading to Kikuyu, is said to have lost control after hitting a pavement. The lorry driver then collided with the tanker, triggering an explosion. Three vehicles parked at a nearby car wash were also damaged in the fire.

The truck driver was confirmed dead following the collision.

At the time of publication, traffic officers from Lang’ata had sealed off the affected stretch, with vehicles from Mombasa Road heading towards Kikuyu allowed to pass, although significant congestion was being experienced.

Emergency crews have been deployed and are working to put out the fire while controlling traffic flow.

Motorists have been urged to steer clear of the affected section of the Southern Bypass and seek alternative routes until the situation is brought under control.

Members of the public were also warned against approaching the scene due to the risk of explosions, toxic fumes, and other related hazards.

Residents in surrounding areas were advised to remain cautious and comply with instructions from police and emergency services.
