Five people were on Wednesday killed in separate standoffs between police and anti-government protestors in Machakos and Kajiado Counties.

Three of the deceased persons were gunned down around the Mlolongo Expressway Toll Station after barricading and vandalising the road which in turn disrupted traffic on the route.

Police say that the protestors, who allegedly also hurled stones at a Quick Mart Supermarket adjacent to the toll station, wanted to loot the booth after destroying the Mlolongo Expressway wall.

Police have however secured the critical infrastructure unit and closed the expressway, further paralysing traffic on the route that connects Mlolongo to Nairobi.

The two remaining casualties likewise lost their lives in similar demonstrations in Kitengela.
