An 18-year-old Form Four leaver died after he was mauled by a hippopotamus at Kokina beach in West Yimbo location Usigu sub-county within Siaya County last evening.

The boy who has been identified as Maxwell Ochieng’ met his untimely demise after he went to take a bath at the shores of Lake Victoria, only three days after finishing his KCSE examinations at Osieko Secondary School.

According to the Chief of West Yimbo location, Paul Olang’, the boy is said to have gone to take a bath at the lakeshore together with his three other friends when the hippo attacked and mauled him as the others who managed to run for safety watched helplessly.

Olang’, who confirmed the 6.00 pm incident stated that the hippo mauled and threw Maxwell’s body into the lake. The body is yet to be retrieved.

He stated that a search for that body would begin Wednesday morning and warned children against bathing along the lake shore especially now that the lake is full as a result of the increased rains.

The administrator has at the same time asked parents and guardians to take good care of their children to ensure they don’t play along the lakeshore to avert such untimely loss of lives.
