Form Four girl killed by floods in Kisii

A Form Four student died on Tuesday evening after she was swept by flood waters at River Nyangweta, in Kenyenya Sub-county, Kisii.

The girl, who was a student at Magenche Secondary School, was heading home after participating in school ball games at Maiga Secondary School.

According to Kiabugesi Assistant Chief Evans Asanyo, the girl drowned as she attempted to close the bridge while river was swollen.

The chief said efforts by members of the public to save the girl were futile as by the time she was retrieved from the waters she was already dead.

The chief appealed to members of the public to cautious when crossing swollen rivers and schools to be wary of students safety when releasing them during the ongoing rainy season.

The Kenya Meteorological Department on Sunday warned residents of Western, Central and North Rift regions to brace themselves for heavy rainfall on Monday and Tuesday this week.

“Flood waters are likely to appear in places where it has not rained heavily and is expected to be deeper and faster, do not shelter under trees and near grilled windows or in open fields, this exposes one to lightening strikes,” said the weatherman.

According to a statement from the Met. department, Counties that are set to be affected include; Turkana, Marsabit, Mandera, West Pokot, Elgeyo Marakwet, Trans Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Nandi, Baringo, Kericho, Nakuru Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Kisii, Nyamira, Laikipia, Nyandarua, Kiambu, Murang’a and Nyeri.
