Form One student takes cockerel to school as payment for Ksh.48K fee

A Form One student reporting to Kangaru School in Embu County arrived at the school accompanied by her mother while carrying a cockerel as his means to pay secondary school fees.

Lawrence Murimi, 14,  scored 313 marks in his KCPE examinations and said he was given the cockerel by his uncle after being initiated.

Speaking on Wednesday after trekking 5 kilometers to the school with his mother, Pauline Mukami, a teary Lawrence said they were sent back home to get the Ksh.48,000 required for school fees.

“I told my mother that since the cockerel that was given to me was the only thing that we can take to school after we tried knocking on all the doors seeking help but we couldn't get any,” he narrated outside the school gate.

He added that the cockerel had been valued at a meager Ksh.1,000, a drop in the ocean of the school fees needed to get him admitted.

Ms. Mukami said after receiving the admission letter for his son, he started to traverse all offices to seek help but it was not forthcoming.

She said her son was forced to take with him to high school the old notebooks he was using in Class Eight.

The single mother who resides at Majengo Estate in Embu is now calling upon well wishers to come to the aid of her son.
