Kwale politician shot dead

A politician from Ukunda, Kwale County and his friend were on Tuesday evening killed by unknown assailants.

Omar Kombo Gude vied for the Ukunda MCA seat in the 2017 General Election as an independent candidate after losing out in the ODM nominations.

Mr. Kombo and Nasib Nditi were waiting for a physiotherapist who has been attending to the politician after one side of his body developed mild paralysis.

According to a family member, Hamisi Mwachikuzi, Kombo has been visiting the place severally for a massage and it appears the assailants had been trailing him.

Mwachikuzi says the two were waiting in their car when the assailants approached and shot on the windscreen at around 8pm.

“They tried to escape but the attackers followed each of them and shot them severally on the head and thighs and they died on the spot,” said Mwachikuzi, who reportedly reached the scene immediately after the incident.

Kombo’s son, Juma Swaleh, said his father had dinner at Tsunami dishes before proceeding to Kibundani.

“My father was also a businessman, apart from politics, and we have never heard of any differences with his peers because he mingled without quarrels,” said Swaleh.

The family is now calling on authorities to ensure the perpetrators are brought to book, saying this was not the first killing in the area.

Area OCPD Joseph Cheboit said investigations are currently underway. Police could not immediately establish the motive behind the killing.
