Former Imenti Central Member of Parliament Gideon Mwiti is dead.

The former lawmaker succumbed to diabetes at a Nairobi hospital Sunday morning, according to the family. He was aged 57.

Mr. Mwiti is reported to have developed diabetes-complications Saturday night before he was rushed to hospital where he succumbed.

He served as MP from 2013 to 2017 before he retired from active politics to venture into private business.

The lawmaker previously hit headlines for wrong reasons after he was arraigned and charged with raping a woman in Nairobi in 2015. He denied the charges before Magistrate Francis Andayi.

He was also on the verge of being declared bankrupt after his firm, Akiba Micro-Finance, collapsed with savings of over 6,000 members.
