Former Lands CS Charity Ngilu invited back to Jubilee

Kiharu Member of Parliament Irungu Kang’ata has called on Narc party leader and former Lands Cabinet Secretary Charity Ngilu to wind up her party and join Jubilee.

Speaking on Sunday, Kang’ata said that the newly formed Jubilee party is better placed to form the next government pointing at the willingness by President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto to join in as an indication of intent.

“Everybody knows that Jubilee will form the next government and that is why everyone including President Kenyatta and DP Ruto have folded their parties (TNA and URP) and joined the new party,” he said.

“I want you to become the Governor of Kitui, but the best way you can repay me is by folding Narc and joining Jubilee.”

Ngilu, who was part of the Jubilee coalition that took power in 2013, has since gone back into politics after her dismissal from Cabinet over corruption allegations.

The former CS is accused of receiving a bribe for the sale of Karen land and inflating the price of Waitiki land, which was bought by the government for the resettlement of squatters in Mombasa.

She has, however, defended herself over the claims, blaming some ‘forces’ for pushing her exit from the land docket owing to her sternness in dealing with land grabbing and corruption at Ardhi House.

Ngilu, who was a one-time presidential candidate (1997) and a long serving Kitui Central MP, has announced her interest in the Kitui governorship race, and is set to face off with the incumbent, Julius Malombe.

“I will be running for the governor’s seat because I have been approached by people who believe that I can perform better than the incumbent. I am going to listen to the voice of the people because they know the kind of leaders they want,” announced Ngilu in March this year.

Ngilu announced that she will be contesting for the seat on her National Alliance Rainbow Coalition (NARC) party ticket, and not CORD or Jubilee.

She may have to face it off with Wiper chair, David Musila, to whom she lost the 2013 Kitui Senate race, or Malombe who is set to defend his seat.

Musila has expressed interest in vying for the governorship seat with the most likely scenario being an internal consensus on the preferred candidate since both him and Malombe are members of the Wiper party.

Malombe won the ticket on a Wiper ticket in 2013 seeing off competition from Philip Kitonga of National Labour Party and KiemaKilonzo of Narc.

It is expected that Jubilee may endorse a candidate to square it out with a CORD candidate in the race as they seek entry into Ukambani region, largely considered Wiper leader and CORD co-principal Kalonzo Musyoka’s forte.
