Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has
officially relinquished his position as Jubilee party member effective March
10, 2022.
In a letter to the party’s headquarters,
Sonko said he was not forced out but rather voluntarily agreed to cut ties with
the President Uhuru Kenyatta-led outfit.
“Please accept this letter as my formal
notice of resignation as a member of the Jubilee party effective March 10,
2022. This is in exercise of my rights to belong to a political party of my
choice as enshrined under the constitution of Kenya,” the letter reads in part.
He likewise thanked the party’s hierarchy for
supporting him prior to his impeachment as Nairobi governor, which he still
maintains was done illegally.
“I would like to thank the party leadership
for the support that they provided me while I served as a Governor of the
Nairobi City County before I was unlawfully removed from office and hope that
they can help change this country for the better. I wish the party and the
esteemed members all the best in the future,” he added.
His resignation comes just days after the
U.S. government barred Sonko and his immediate kin from entering the Joe
Biden-led nation owing to his alleged involvement in ‘significant corruption’,
when he occupied the corner office at City Hall.
