Four arrested over Family Bank Ksh.24M robbery

Four employees of Family Bank, Ruiru branch will remain in police custody for the next days as police probe how Ksh.24 million was robbed from the bank.

The four, who were arrested in connection to the heist, were Tuesday arraigned before Kiambu Chief Magistrate Stella Atambo but were not allowed to take plea.

The accused were identified as Jane Wanjiku, Robert Nduriru, Silus Mugo and Charity Wanjiku.

In a sworn affidavit, investigating Officer Paul Wambugu told the court that the suspects are believed to have conspired in the theft that occurred either on the night of July 14 or July 15 this year.

Wambugu argued that if released on bond, the suspects could abscond court or interfere with investigations.

The prosecution applied to have the suspects detained for seven days; a wish that was granted by the magistrate.

The investigating officer told the court that they were following crucial leads that will lead to arrest of more suspects.

According to Ruiru OCPD James Ng’etich, the bank security manager is the one who raised the alarm on the theft.

“After opening the bank, John Muchiri discovered that the alarm system had been tampered with.

“On further checking, he discovered that the fire alarm system had been vandalized,” Ng’etich said.

The burglars reportedly gained access into Family Bank through the kitchen roof.

“They managed to access the strong room to the safe by cutting the door using welding gas cylinder power and further accessed the ATM machine using claw bars,” the police boss added.

Police officers visited the crime scene at Family Bank, Ruiru on Monday where they recovered a gas cylinder and four claw bars.
