At least four people died last evening in Kerugoya, Kirinyaga County, when a matatu they were travelling in rolled severally on the tarmac after the driver lost control of the vehicle.

A police report from the scene says the four died on the spot as a result of the impact of the accident.

Several other people in the vehicle were evacuated and taken to various hospitals within Kirinyaga County.

The accident involving a Kukena Sacco matatu happened when the driver lost control while negotiating a sharp bend in Koroma area on the Kerugoya - Ngaru - Gatuto road.

The vehicle headed to Kagio from Kerugoya then rolled severally and landed in a ditch on the roadside.

Among those who died were two male adults, one female adult and a young girl.

The accident adds to the latest cases where tens of people have lost their lives.  A week ago, 11 students from Kenyatta University perished in a grisly road accident at Maungu in Voi, while they were on a trip to Mombasa.

The university bus collided with a trailer on the busy Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, leaving many others with severe injuries.
