Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has assured Kenyans that fuel prices
are expected to drop in
the coming months, downplaying the recent spike as a one-off occurrence.
Speaking before the National Assembly’s Energy
Committee, CS Wandayi said, “The recent increase in fuel prices was a temporary
situation. In fact, prices at the pump have generally been decreasing since
July last year.”
He attributed the July–August 2025 fuel price
hike to a combination of factors, including applicable taxes, global market
dynamics, and increased landing costs.
CS Wandayi also informed the committee that the
ministry has been implementing a fuel stabilization fund aimed at cushioning
Kenyans from volatile fuel prices. The fund provides support to petroleum
distributors to help mitigate the impact on consumers.
The CS’s remarks come amid growing public
concern over the cost of living and the ripple effect of fuel prices on other
sectors of the economy.
In the recent review by the Energy and Petroleum
Regulatory Authority (EPRA), Super petrol, diesel, and kerosene prices went up
by Ksh.8.99, Ksh.8.67 and Ksh.9.65 per litre.
