Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has called for the suspension of the Deputy Inspector General Kenya Police Service (DIG) Eliud Lagat over the unexplained death of Albert Ojwang'.

Taking to his X account on Monday, Gachagua says the police boss must take full responsibility for Ojwang's arrest following a comment he made on his social media account.

"He must take full responsibility for this murder," Gachagua wrote.

Gachagua further claimed that DIG Lagat is operating Kamukunji Police Station and Central Police Station without the knowledge of the Inspector General of Police (IG) Douglas Kanja.

He alleged that the two police stations have become "the new torture chambers", justifying Ojwang's transfer from Homa Bay to the Central Police Station.

He therefore scoffed at the interdiction of police officers who were on duty when Ojwang' was booked, arguing that going after the small fish will not aid in serving justice.

"Suspending junior officers at Central Police Station is hoodwinking Kenyans. For any meaningful investigations to be done, Mr. Eliud Lagat must be suspended immediately," Gachagua added.

Ojwang' was picked up by police officers in Kakot, Homa Bay County, on Saturday afternoon, taken to Nairobi, only to be found dead on Sunday after his father, Meshack Opiyo, arrived to inquire about his only son's whereabouts.

A police report claims that the incident was filed as suicide, after an officer on a routine visit to the cell Ojwang' was locked in found him “with blood oozing from his head.”

The report added that preliminary investigations showed that Ojwang', who was booked in for the offence of false publication, sustained head injuries “by hitting his head severally against the wall inside the cell.”

Gachagua has condemned the mysterious death, calling for an immediate probe and has vowed to join other vexed Kenyans in ensuring Ojwang's family achieves justice.

"To the family of Albert and the people of HomaBay County, friends of Albert and the people of Kenya, especially the GenZs, I stand with you in seeking justice for Albert, whose murder has fingers pointed to this cowardly regime."

He further accused the government of silencing its critics by killing them, urging President William Ruto to honour his pledge of protecting Kenyans.

"There has been no worse mutilation of our freedoms in Kenya than under this regime," he said.

"It is now clear that the so-called Broad-based Government is [a] Blood-Based Government whose engine is powered by the blood of GenZs. It was formed after the blood of young people was splashed in the streets, and it continues to survive on this. The beneficiaries are quiet as the young people get brutally murdered."
