Former Deputy president Rigathi Gachagua has expressed concerns over the return of illicit brews in the central region.

Speaking to the residents of Kangai in Kirinyaga county through a phone call the former Deputy president said the Kenya Kwanza administration has deliberately allowed the sale of deadly substance in the region.

Gachagua expressed concerns after two people were hospitalized after consuming toxic alcohol in Kangai on Tuesday. They were taken to Kerugoya referral hospital for treatment.

The former Deputy president said it is worrying for the government to allow counterfeit alcohol in Kangai ward, where 17 people were buried in February 2024 after consuming deadly liquor.

The former DP addressed the residents through a call to Kirinyaga Senator James Murango.

Senator Murango, Kirinyaga woman representative Jane Njeri maina and Baragwi MCA David Mathenge, who visited Kangai village after the Tuesday incident accused the county government of licensing more bars and security teams of allowing bar owners to operate 24 hours.

Gachagua told the Kangai residents he will launch a new political party next month which will also fight illicit brew in the region.
