Garissa clans sign historic peace deal

Two warring clans in Garissa County have signed a historic peace agreement aimed at ending a deep-rooted animosity between them.

The meeting held at a Garissa hotel brought together residents, leaders, elders and clerics from Abduwak and Aulian clans, in an event overseen by top security officers.

The long running hostility between the two rival clans that reside in Balambala and Lagdera sub-counties revolved around water, pasture and boundaries.

It was agreed the communities surrender all illegally guns held, return all stolen animals and compensate persons who suffered losses or injuries during the period.

Garissa Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) Secretary Abdullahi Salat said the deal will go a long way in ending the clan conflicts that have dogged the two communities for a long time.
