Govt subsidised fertiliser arrives at Mombasa port

The Kenyan Government has received fertiliser imports for distribution to farmers across the country.

With only 193,000 bags left in stores, Agriculture and Irrigation CS Mwangi Kiunjuri said the ministry has pushed for an allocation of another consignment worth Ksh. 1.2billion through the supplementary budget to ensure regular supply.

“As we speak ,we have released a total of 1,003,000 bags, meaning that what we can distribute is 193,000 bags. I am made to understand that we are able to push over 30,000 bags,” he said.

There has been growing demand for the product as farmers continue to take advantage of the current rainy season. They require at least 12 million bags of fertiliser per year.

However, for the current planting season, CS Kiunjuri said farmers will receive up to 1.2 million bags in subsidy.

He admitted that there was a challenge of distribution in most parts of the country, but assured farmers that the matter will be resolved.

“In the next five days, starting April 7, all stores will be cleared and the bags will be headed to different destinations across the country,” Mr. Kiunjuri said.

The CS further added that the Government would import 3.5 million bags of maize to supplement what is currently in the stores.
