Government Fighting Land Reforms, Mombasa Senator Says

Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar accused the Jubilee administration of fighting hard to frustrate efforts by the National Land Commission (NLC) to reform the controversial land sector.

Mr. Omar said that the Jubilee government has created parallel roles for the Cabinet Secretary for Lands that are in conflict with those of the land commission.

“The administration of President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy has consistently frustrated efforts by the land commission to address the emotive land issue,” said Mr. Omar.

Accumulating land parcels

He said that the government is full of land cartels that have vowed to ensure the land commission does not succeed in its mandate.

“We know the cartels in the government who are out there fighting the Mohamed Swazuri led team in order to ensure the commission fails in its mandate.”

The outspoken Senator said that top Jubilee leaders have accumulated parcels of land across the country.

“This accumulation of land by the Jubilee officials is an indication that they are not ready to address historical injustices that have faced Kenyans over years,” he added.

He called on Kenyans to support the Okoa Kenya Referendum Bill since it will help address such issues.

He was speaking during the launch of the Bill at the Bomas of Kenya.
