Kwale Governor Fatuma Achani and Principal Secretary for Water and Irrigation Ephantus Kimotho on Friday officially broke ground for the construction of the Mwache Health Center in Mazeras, Kasemeni Ward, Samburu Sub-County. The facility, which will also include three staff residences, is part of the broader Ksh 20 billion Mwache Dam project aimed at transforming both infrastructure and social services in the region.

Governor Achani described the project as a clear example of collaborative governance between the County and National Governments, reaffirming her administration’s dedication to delivering tangible benefits to local communities through national development initiatives.

“This health center project is one of the joint efforts between the County and National Governments to ensure that citizens directly benefit from major national projects such as the Mwache Dam,” said Governor Achani during the launch.

She further announced the elevation of the facility from a dispensary to a fully-fledged health center, underscoring its critical role in improving healthcare delivery in the area.

“My administration is committed to ensuring that Kwale County’s health sector receives the support and resources it needs to provide quality healthcare services to our people,” she added.

According to the Governor, Kwale County has made significant strides in healthcare development, having constructed and equipped at least 178 health facilities and hired more than 1,600 health professionals across the region.

Principal Secretary Kimotho emphasized the health center's importance as a key component of the Mwache Dam initiative. Beyond water provision, he noted, the project is designed to foster holistic community development

“We believe that the Mwache Dam project is not just about water, but also about community development, and this health center will be a key pillar in improving the lives of people in this area,” Kimotho stated.

Local residents welcomed the project with optimism. Samuel Gubo, a resident of Mazeras, expressed relief and gratitude, saying the new facility would ease the burden of traveling long distances for medical care, particularly in emergencies.

“This facility comes as a miracle for our long-time prayer of having a health center in our area. We’ve faced many challenges, especially during medical emergencies at night,” said Gubo.
