Supporters of Nyeri Governor Nderitu Gachagua and area MP Peter Weru were engaged in a scuffle Wednesday over the construction of Karatina Market re-commissioned by Land and Housing CS Prof. Jacob Kaimenyi.

The opposing factions engaged in a show of might with each side claiming credit for the initiative to revive the market whose construction work has dragged on over six years.

Speaking during an inspection tour of the incomplete market, CS Kaimenyi said that the construction stalled two years ago, and will be completed at a cost of Ksh 202 million in one year.

Governor Gachagua hailed the national government for allocating cash to complete the market adding that the county is working closely with traders to ensure only the rightful persons are allocated space in the new market.

The proposed market, with a capacity of 2,200 traders, was initially allocated a total of Ksh 254 million through the Economic Stimulus Programme.
