Mombasa Governor Abdullswamad Sheriff Nassir has assured the safety of infrastructure near an 11-storey building that is set to be demolished.

While calling for vacation of the marked areas near the building, the governor said that the Nyali Bridge, which is set to be closed during the operation, will remain safe for use.

“The structure of the bridge will not be affected. The bridge is firm and from our calculations, it will not be affected. This is a very calculated demolition,” he said.

He also assured that homes and business premises neighbouring the structure will not be tampered with as the military-led operation will be done in a precise manner.

“We have done whatever needs to be done and we are just asking everyone nearby to vacate. Staying nearby will harm your body, your ears could also be damaged by the noise,” said the governor.

Nassir added that due to the delicate nature of the operation, the team had to take time mapping risks before beginning the demolition process.

On Tuesday, the Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya gazetted a notice for deployment of the Kenya Defence Forces to lead the operation that is expected to take nearly 8 hours.

The said building began to sink on April 2, 2025.
