Governor Obado wants Migori County Govt to take over Sony Sugar Company

Migori Governor Okoth Obado wants the national government to allow the Migori County Government to take over management of the Sony Sugar Company.

Speaking on Tuesday, Governor Obado reaffirmed his hard stance against privatization of the Sony Sugar Company, saying he will write a letter to Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri to allow Migori County Government to own the troubled sugar company.

Obado, who was meeting cane farmers at Sony Sugar Company, said privatizing the company would lead to over 2,000 people employed by the company losing their jobs.

He urged the company workers, farmers and other leaders in Migori County to protect the company from privatization, which he said would only worsen the situation.

Obado said the county government is ready to take control of the company if the national government is tired of running it.

Meanwhile, the Kenya Sugarcane Plantation and Allied Workers Union has suspended the Sony Sugar Company workers strike after the two parties signed return-to-work agreement.

The union deputy Secretary General John Ogutu confirmed the suspension of the strike pending implementation of the agreement.

Besides payment of salaries, the union is demanding suspension of the company MD Bernard Otieno and the company Finance Manager Peter Otieno.

Sony Sugar Company Board Director Chairman, in a letter dated April 15, acknowledged the demand for the suspension of the MD and Finance Manager, saying the matter will proceed to the full board for ratification.

He, however, added that the two leaders have been sent on leave pending investigation.

However, speaking to Radio Ramogi, the company MD Benard Otieno said he is not aware of any suspension as being speculated.
