Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja on Friday ordered the demolition of
a building sitting on a allegedly grabbed piece of land in Eastleigh.
Sakaja jumped into action after area residents complained
about the Eastleigh Health Centre-bordering building which they say was erected
by a crooked businessman who has the backing of a Nairobi Member of County Assembly
(MCA).
Reports say that concerned citizens lodged a complaint with
Geoffrey Mosiria, the Nairobi County Chief Officer of Health Facilities, urging
him to take action and reclaim the crucial piece of land.
Once the demolitions occurred, the MCA alleged that the Governor's
actions were informed by the fact that he uncovered graft cases at City Hall.
Sub-county Medical Officer Dr. Miriam Etole however defended
the county's actions noting that City Hall is obligated to defend developmental
public land from being grabbed in Nairobi.
"Eastleigh Health Centre is one of the Public Health
Facilities within Kamukunji Sub-County located on three plots along Fourth
Street and Muyuyu Lane Eastleigh Second Avenue," Etole is quoted as saying
by ‘Kenyans’ media outlet.
"The facility offers curative, maternal neonatal child health
services, maternity as well as sexual and Gender-Based Violence response
unit. However, during the Christmas holidays, the MCA accessed the
building and demolished it, leaving residents with no health
centre."
