Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja now says he will do away with the Green Park Bus Terminus, stating that it failed to achieve its intended purpose.

Sakaja says his office has plans to instead put up a mega-conference facility on the parcel of land to recoup its high value in the city.

He notes that the Green Park terminus which was built by the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) at a cost of Ksh. 180 million has never been utilised after four test runs failed.

This is even as the contractor who put up the bus terminus says that he is still owed over Ksh.90 million for the construction works.

“The Green Park Station is the most prime piece of land in East Africa, 5 acres in the CBD. It was not supposed to be a bus terminal. All of the trials that have been tried even during NMS time failed,” he said on Citizen TV's JKLive Show.

Governor Sakaja hinted at plans to put up a convention centre similar to the Kigali Convention Centre noting that the move would attract more investors into the capital, hence increasing the country's revenue collection.

“Picture this, you land in Nairobi from abroad and in five minutes, you exit the expressway into the centre. There is a mall and other facilities. That is something we're exploring doing under Public-Private Partnerships (PPP). People have expressed interest in building hotels in the conference facility,” Sakaja noted.

Further, Sakaja stated that efforts to have long-distance buses terminate their journeys there were frustrating.

In addition, the contractor who was charged with the construction of the terminus claims that he has yet to be paid over Ksh.90 million for the works, two years after the project was completed.

After the construction of the park, NMS conducted 4 test runs to see its visibility, all of which failed after the revelation that it does in fact cause huge traffic jams.

The much-hyped Green Park Bus terminus was meant to decongest the Nairobi Central Business District. However, despite retired President Uhuru Kenyatta inspecting the terminus three times last year, it was never opened to the public.

The park has commercial offices, shops, supermarkets, eateries, an abolition block, cleaning and management services. Green Park already has a police post and an operating dispensary and an ablution block.
