The government is considering compensating farmers whose crops were destroyed by heavy rains.

The raging floods caused destruction to 60,000 acres of crops across the country leaving 10,000 farmers counting losses.

Making the announcement, Agriculture Principal Secretary Paul Rono said the government is collecting the data on the affected farmers with a view to assisting them to resume farming activities.

The PS was speaking during distribution of 5,000 avocado seedlings to farmers in Chepsir in Kipkelion East Constituency, Kericho County

“We will ensure we help farmers access seeds, fertiliser and also drain water from farms. Nearly 60,000 farms have been washed away. Last week the Kenya Seed Company made a huge loss after its farms were washed off,” said Rono.

The heavy rainfall, which has caused mass destruction in the country also led to loss of lives and displacement of people.

As a result, the government also postponed the opening of schools until the rains subsided.
