The government is fully prepared to address any food crisis arising from failed rains and will ensure that no Kenyan suffers from hunger, Public Service, Human Capital Development and Special Programmes Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku has said.
Speaking in
Runyenjes, Embu County, during the burial of the late Johnson Mbogo Kabuthi, CS
Ruku said the government is closely monitoring the food situation across the
country.
He acknowledged
that some parts of Kenya are currently experiencing drought but urged citizens
to remain calm, assuring them that effective measures are already in place to
mitigate the situation.
According to the
CS, the government has put in place robust mechanisms to guarantee food
availability for all Kenyans, regardless of their location, and is implementing
proactive interventions to cushion vulnerable communities.
Ruku emphasized
that food security remains a top priority for the Kenya Kwanza administration,
particularly in the face of changing climate patterns that continue to affect
agricultural production.
He noted that
through his ministry, the government has strengthened emergency response
systems to support communities affected by drought and hunger, including the
distribution of relief food to the most vulnerable households.
“In the last year
alone, my department has traversed many regions across the country to
distribute relief food to Kenyans affected by drought and other calamities,”
Ruku said.
He reiterated that
the government will not allow any Kenyan to suffer due to lack of food.
The CS also lauded
the establishment of the National Infrastructure Fund, describing it as a game
changer in the quest for long-term food security. He explained that part of the
fund will be directed towards water projects, including the development of irrigation
infrastructure.
“This fund will
enable us to invest in irrigation and improve access to water, ensuring
consistent food production even during dry seasons,” he said.
Ruku reaffirmed
the government’s commitment to protecting Kenyans from hunger and building a
resilient, food-secure nation for the future.
