Gov’t to give flood victims’ families Ksh.200K, cover hospital and mortuary bills

The government will give Ksh.200,000 to families who lost loved ones in the recent floods and fully cater for hospital and mortuary bills.

Public Service, Human Capital and Special Programmes Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku made the announcement in Kangundo, Machakos County, saying the government is putting in place measures to prevent further loss of life as rains continue to pound several parts of the country.

“The government is putting up measures to ensure no other Kenyan loses their lives because of floods. The State will also give Ksh.200,000 per family for all those who have lost their loved ones and cater for hospital and mortuary bills,” he said.

The CS urged Kenyans to exercise caution during the rainy season and avoid crossing rivers and flooded waterways on foot, motorcycles or in vehicles.

He noted that counties such as Wajir, Mandera, Marsabit and Taita Taveta had been facing drought conditions but have recently received rainfall, which has also resulted in flooding.

Ruku spoke after flagging off the distribution of food relief to primary and day secondary schools in Kangundo sub-county, accompanied by area MP Fabian Kyule, before he later toured Mwala and Machakos sub-counties for similar events.

CS Ruku said the government had dispatched six lorries of food supplies to ensure learners in the area have adequate meals to support their education.

He added that two canters carrying porridge flour had also been set aside for distribution to PP1 and PP2 learners.

“President Ruto has ordered that food for children in all primary schools in Kangundo be delivered from today up to Sunday. Six lorries will distribute food to ensure all children are fed. Porridge flour for young children and mothers will also be provided,” he said.

The CS further reiterated the government’s commitment to expanding electricity access across the country.

“All Kenyans have a right to electricity in their homes, the rich and the poor alike. Even if a home is made of grass, stone or mud, the government will ensure all Kenyans have electricity,” he stated.

Ruku criticised the opposition, especially Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, over their empty rhetoric, as he urged residents to support President William Ruto for a second term, saying the administration should be given time to deliver on its promises.

“Do not be misled by those who have been in government for many years but have little to show for it. Kalonzo was a minister when I was in primary school na sasa niko na ndevu ya white,” he said.
