Gov’t unfair in IDs issuance – Nubian community

Members of the Nubia Community have accused the government of unfair issuance of National ID cards.

Addressing the press in Kibra, the chairperson of the Nubia community, Shaffie Ali Hussein, said with the inclusion of the vetting process before issuance of the IDs, the Nubia community will not receive their IDs in a timely manner to facilitate them register as voters.

The Nubians threatened to march to State House if their IDs are not processed within the shortest time possible.

The residents said that they are asked to produce birth certificates, clinic cards and other documents to verify that they are of Kenyan origin.

Women Affairs Chairperson, Fatuma Abdul Afisi, argued that other communities take shorter time to acquire IDs which is not the case with the Nubians.

She said that applicants from the community undergo more than a year of vetting, which must be supported by multiple documents, before acquiring the vital document.
