GSU officer in critical condition after failed suicide attempt
A police officer from the General Service Unit (GSU) in
Trans Nzoia County is
fighting for his life in an Eldoret hospital after shooting himself in a
suicide attempt.
Joram Kiplagat, 24,
reportedly shot himself in the jaw on Sunday night after reporting back to his
camp in Miti Mbili GSU camp from a 10-day-off break.
County Police Commander Jecinta Wesonga said
Kiplagat had excused himself for a water break, during a night shift duty, when
he headed to his colleague's house and turned the gun on himself.
"He told his
colleagues he needed drinking water. He walked into one of their houses and
locked the door from inside. That is when he tried to end his life," said
Wesonga.
"His colleagues
reported hearing three gunshots. They broke the door and found he had shot
himself. The bullet had come out through the nose."
Kiplagat's seniors say
that the circumstances under which he shot himself still remain unclear as they
kick off investigations.
