Gunshots as Nairobi MCAs fight over House leadership – VIDEO

Chaos rocked City Hall on Monday after Nairobi Members of County Assembly once again engaged in a fight over the county assembly leadership.

The fracas characterised by gunshots, teargas, pepper spray and running battles occurred after a faction of MCAs allied to Speaker Beatrice Elachi attempted to eject Majority Leader Abdi Guyo from office.

The two groups of MCAs — those siding with Speaker Elachi and those allied to Majority Leader Guyo — confronted each other prompting police to lob teargas canisters and fire in the air to disperse the county legislators.

Last week, the group allied to the Speaker presented minutes of a meeting allegedly held at Sai Rock Hotel in Mombasa where Jubilee MCAs are claimed to have resolved to replace the party’s leadership in the assembly.

During the alleged meeting, the MCAs decided to replace Mr Guyo with Dandora III MCA Charles Thuo.

Nominated MCA June Ndegwa was picked to replace Chege Waithera as the Majority Chief Whip.

Ziwani MCA Millicent Mugadi was proposed to be the deputy majority leader and California MCA Hassan Abdikadir as the deputy chief whip.

During Monday’s battle, the two groups blamed each other for the chaos, with Guyo claiming that he was attacked by goons who hurled teargas canisters at him before breaking the door to his office.
