Health PS Tum roots for sex education in schools

Health Principal Secretary Peter Tum on Thursday pitched for sex and behavioral education in schools in a bid to curb increasing cases of teenage pregnancies.

Speaking at Wareng High School in Eldoret while overseeing the distribution of KCSE examination papers, Tum said sex and behavioural education should be included in the curriculum to create awareness among students on the risks involved in engaging in sex at a tender age.

This comes in the wake of high cases of teenage pregnancies witnessed across the country during the KCPE and KCSE examinations.

During the start of KCSE, Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed revealed that preliminary reports indicate that the country could be staring at a crisis, if the issue of teenage pregnancies is not addressed.

“We have detected a high number of candidates who became mothers during the three days of KCPE,” Amina said.

“If this is happening all year round in the country, then we could be facing a real crisis.”

A high number of KCPE candidates were this year forced to write their exams in hospitals after going into labour during exams.
