Heavy Rains Destroy 14 Roads, kill 4,795 Livestock in one day: Red Cross

The heavy rains that have been pounding the country for the third week have caused untold havoc, with scores of people injured and hundreds displaced.

According to a statement issued by the Kenya Red Cross on Monday, rains have affected at least 23,336 households in the last day, with 10,144 households displaced.

While urging caution in the 23 Kenyan counties where flooding has been reported since the beginning of the rains, the Red Cross reported 14 roads destroyed and 18 schools damaged in the last day.

The rains also killed 4,795 livestock, according to the non-profit organisation, and 206 businesses were affected, as well as 27,716 acres of arable land submerged.

Since the rains began, 188 people have been rescued across the country, including three people rescued in Joska after the Athi river burst its banks and stranded them and their dog.

According to the Red Cross, several households in Machakos County's Kinanie, Joska, and Kamulu areas have been impacted by the overflowing Athi River, while Nairobi and Ngong Rivers have caused flooding in Kibra, South C, South B, Mukuru Kwa Njenga, Viwandani, and Kilimani.
