Heroin worth over Ksh.1B discovered in British towels, bathrobes

Detectives have seized almost 1.3 tons of heroin with an estimated street value of Ksh.1.48 billion from a container ship in in the U.K.

According to CNN, officers from the National Crime Agency (NCA) and the Border Force found heroin hidden in a cargo of towels and bathrobes.

“This is a record heroin seizure in the U.K. and one of the largest ever in Europe,” Matt Horne, NCA deputy director of investigations, said on Wednesday.

According to NCA intelligence, the ship is suspected to have been ferrying the heroin to the Belgian port of Antwerp via Felixstowe.

It took almost six hours for the officers to remove the drugs from the ship before it could continue its voyage.

The law enforcement officials then tracked the container to Rotterdam via Antwerp.

“This seizure has denied organised crime tens of millions of pounds in profits,” said Horne.

Three arrests were made as a result of the operation.
