‘Hogwash!’: Raila dismisses High Court ruling on IEBC reconstitution
Orange
Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga has trashed the High Court’s
ruling that ordered the reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and
Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to continue without the recommendation of the
NADCO report which is before Parliament.
Odinga
on Sunday termed Justice Mugure Thande's February 1 ruling as hogwash.
The
court ordered that the Nelson Makanda-led selection panel should start the
recruitment of commissioners to the electoral body immediately.
Odinga insisted that the formation of the new IEBC would only continue after the passage of the NADCO report in Parliament.
"That is hogwash. Until Wandayi and Kalonzo's report goes through Parliament, we cannot begin to speak about IEBC. As for the cost of living, our demand for lowering it remains," Odinga said.
Odinga
was speaking at Kamukunji grounds during the ODM membership registration drive
where he urged his supporters to get enlisted en masse.
This
came in the wake of the high pressure from his lieutenant led by Mombasa Governor
Abdulswamad Sharif and former Kakamega Governor Wyclif Oparanya who revealed
that Odinga will be on the ballot in the 2027 general election.
The
rally was attended by several ODM lawmakers within the city who castigated President
William Ruto's administration for failing to fulfil its pre-election pledges to
the people.
The
MPs condemned the push by the government through the Ministry of Education to
collect school fees through the e-citizen platform saying it is a recipe for graft.
