Doctors in Homa Bay County have announced a strike effective Saturday
midnight over what they termed as a multitude of pressing issues that the
devolved unit’s administration has failed to address over the years.
The strike was the culmination of a meeting between the doctors and
their representatives under the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and
Dentist Union (KMPDU), led by Secretary General Dr. Davji Atellah.
The doctors’ cited such issues as lack of promotions for over six
years, non-remittance of statutory deductions for more than two years, as well
as failure to implement contractual engagements
They further went on to allege critical staff shortage in the
county hospitals, arbitrary removal of at least six of their colleagues from
the payroll, and delayed payment of salaries spanning up to six months.
“We reiterated the need for members to unite and demonstrate
the strength of our solidarity. Together, we can overcome these challenges and
work towards creating a conducive environment for all healthcare professionals,”
stated Dr. Atellah.
“As leaders, we want to assure our members that we are fully
committed to a ground-up approach in seeking lasting solutions to the issues
facing members. We shall endeavour to engage members in our various branches to
ensure that we collectively resolve these issues and create dignity at a place
of work.”
