Homa Bay: KCSE candidate dies after collapsing while playing football

A 17-year-old student who was sitting this year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination died while undergoing treatment on Sunday morning.

Javan Onyango, who was writing his exam at DC Mixed Secondary School in Randung’ village, Homa Bay County, reportedly succumbed to injuries sustained while playing football at the school compound after Friday’s papers.

Confirming the incident, Gem West location Chief Joel Otieno said the deceased collapsed after he was accidentally kicked on the stomach during the game and was rushed to a private hospital at Rodi Kopany.

According to Rangwe sub-county Commissioner Elvis K’Olum, the boy was then transferred to Homa Bay County  Teaching and Referral Hospital for specialized treatment where he died.

The body has since been transferred to Homa Bay Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.

The incident comes barely a week after another candidate at Atemo Mixed Secondary School in Rachuonyo East Sub-county also died after collapsing while playing football.
