A 47-year-old police officer mysteriously drowned in a pit latrine on Wednesday night at a rental house in Suba, Homa Bay County.

Kennedy Oyoo, a police constable attached to Nyatoto Police Station, met his death after allegedly drowning inside a pit latrine filled with water in his residential compound at Nyatoto Trading Center.

It is reported that Oyoo had gone for a nature call after returning to his residence at about 11pm when the incident happened.

The officer fell into the pit latrine which was not covered and sustained serious injuries which are said to have led to his death. His body was discovered inside the pit on Thursday morning.

According to Suba Sub-County Police Commander Caxton Ndunda, the pit in which Oyoo fell was 12 feet and half of it was full of water following the heavy rains pounding the area.

Mr. Ndunda said Oyoo sustained serious injuries on the head which could have deterred the officer from calling for help.

The police boss has thus advised residents to cover their pit latrines to prevent loss of lives and injuries.

The officer's body was moved to Rachuonyo South sub-county hospital in Oyugis town for postmortem.
