11 injured in Likoni Ferry stampede

Hundreds of commuters were stranded on Monday morning at the Likoni Channel after three ferries that operate at the channel broke down.

The Kenya Red Cross Society, through their official twitter account, announced that at least 11 people were injured in a stampede at the area due to congestion.

The injured were taken to the Coast General Hospital.

Reports indicate that only one ferry is operational as the transport crisis intensifies.

By Friday, two ferries had broken down causing kilometres-long traffic snarl-up and congestion of commuters at the holding area.

MV Nyayo broke down Friday morning while MV Harambee was withdrawn on Sunday after it developed mechanical problems.

The stalling of the ferries has inconvenienced many commuters who use the channel to and from Mombasa Island.
